ON PARENTING, ADOPTION, AND THE CARE AND FEEDING OF SELF-SERVING IGNORANCE

When I was young, I remember having a debate with a friend as to whether or not it wasn't better for a child to be adopted by a white family than to have no family at all.

I was pretty vehemently in favor of the child being adopted by the white family as to opposed to being lonely in an orphanage (do those exist anymore?) or being passed around within the foster care system or in some sort of group home.

My friend? She couldn't even consider the idea. She wouldn't say the orphanage, foster care, or group home was better. She just wouldn't allow herself to say a white family was better than...I don't know what. She wouldn't make the comparison between white family adopting the child and not having parents from ages 0 to 18. She just wouldn't do it.

Unconscious white people reading this may be upset about the tone of the debate from the outset. Even more likely, unconscious white people reading this may be assuming that we were being "racist" and responding just like so many white people do to us - automatically assuming white people to be inferior.

Reverse Racism!!!! Auggggh!!!!
(<---extreme sarcasm)

However, there is an unwritten context to our conversation that many white people won't understand.

Though the unspoken context of our conversation did have something to do with the inferiority of white parenting, that context assumed a racially unconscious white couple being completely unable to raise a black child that didn't hate herself, himself, or black culture because so many white people do not see white supremacy and it's ability to produce various forms hate that look like everything from standoffish-ness to revulsion.

My friend's unspoken argument was that white people, willfully unaware of the pervasiveness of white supremacy in everyday life, would do more harm than good to a child.  And when I was younger, I disagreed with her.

Today, I think I still do disagree with her. But that's only because the glimpses I've seen of group homes and foster care have frightened me.

It seems like there's a 50/50 chance that the growing up without parents can go terribly wrong in the United States. It seems like there's only a fifty percent chance that one might wind up with foster parents that are wonderful. And my wild @$$ guess of 50% seems like odds too low when it comes to making sure each child is being loved and cared for.

Regardless of my gloom and doom guesses about group homes and bad foster care, kids age out of foster care and group homes at 18 and many that "age out" wind up homeless.

So when black people, like my friend and I, are talking about the adoption of children by white people, all these horrors are being compared to a willfully unconscious white couple raising a child that hates herself/himself. And there most black people know, pretty close to first hand, that there are few things worse than not having a sense of self. Most of us have seen or known someone that has lost some piece of the their sense of self due to being raised while black in the United States.

Just look at how much damage white people, who routinely  have no sense of racial identity, who are routinely unaware that they too have a racial perspective, have done to this entire country. Imagine that kind of racial ignorance being soaked into a child with dark skin. Imagine how much more damage is done to you when white supremacy is coming at you from the inside and outside at the same time.

I guess I thought having the love of white family that thinks you are "a credit to your race" (among other things), without realizing they think way,  was better than all the other zero-parent choices when no black family is available to adopt the child.

I guess I still do.

I guess I always have.

This would tend to mean I thought white parents were better than zero parents even before I knew Senator Barack Obama was, at least partially, raised in these conditions I've described. His white grandmother was racially unconscious and had racist reactions to black people on the street. And I thought white parents were better than zero parents before I even considered that a white couple, like Angelina and Brad, might wake up enough to make a serious effort at racial consciousness for the sake of their non-white and white children.

In my own defense, in the 80s when this discussion was being had, I was probably mostly right in being unable to imagine Ronald-Reagan-loving white folk being able to be racially conscious.

But now, when I read stories about people like Jennifer Cramblett,

who sued an incompetent sperm bank
for accidentally impregnating her
with an African American man's sperm,
who then sued them for her pain, her suffering and emotional....
AFTER she got her money back
ALL THE WHILE KNOWING
that her girl child would one day read
about HER MOTHER'S LAWSUIT OVER
her own skin-color NOT BEING WHITE
and how hard that made
HER MOTHER'S DAY TO DAY LIFE,

I have to rethink my argument.

I keep coming to the same conclusion. But people like her make me go through all the evidence again and again.

* * * * *
You're not supposed to hate people, especially ignorant people who do not really know what they are saying and doing. I know that. And I know white adults can be as ignorant as a 5 year old black or brown child when it comes to race. But I hate this woman's ignorant face.

I wanna lay a curse on this woman. I want to perform a ritual and have her catch  something where she can never speak or communicate her ignorance to anyone, including her child, ever again.

I'm gonna have to pray about my own attitude.

Still, I can't stand the idea that her girl child will love her, will love this white women and have to defend this white woman's actions --especially defend this white woman to herself-- when she grows up. And that's probably true EVEN IF she doesn't by some miracle not-hate herself and/or black culture.

I'm gonna have to pray for this child too.

When writing this piece, I made black people "normal" where no race needs to be mentioned. If people I was talking about were white, I mentioned "white." Were you confused?

By the way, that link at "Reverse Racism" is pretty funny.

BRITAIN EPISODE 2 of CECILE EMEKE's "STROLLING" SERIES

Connecting The Scattered
And Untold Stories
of the

Black/African Diaspora

LOCATION: BRITAIN

The Britain episodes appear to be Emeke's first efforts at this particular series. As a result the British Episodes of "Strolling" are quite a bit shorter than her France "Flaner" version of the same series.

Subjects     Dreams, Ambition, and Opportunity
Black Mental Health connection to history

     Colourism

So far, having seen the France and England episodes, I am amazed at how different our black history is in each country, yet how alike the treatment we get from white people is no matter where we are or what language is being spoken when the white tribe's numbers are largest.

At the same time, I'm appreciating more and more how powerful black people in the United States are, compared to other countries, because our percentage of the population is 13% instead of 3%.

WHERE TO SEE VIOLA AND J-LO as "LILA AND EVE"

"I JUST WANT JUSTICE
FOR THE ONES WHO TOOK MY SON."

"SO LET'S GET IT!"

"Lila and Eve" performed well at Sundance.

And now 100 people have watched it on Amazon. Seventy-eight percent (78%) gave it 4 stars or above.

It's an indie film. Low budget. No extras at all.  Nice slow build up of the suspense. T
his turned out to be a pretty cool flick. Respect to JLo. Who knew she had it in her? I'm giving this 4 stars myself.
Check the link to Amazon at the bottom. You can see it cheap. You can see it cheaper still if you head out to Redbox. I think I saw it for $1.50 and tax.
VIOLA DAVIS & JENNIFER LOPEZ
ARE
LILA AND EVE

If you think you'll want to see it more than once, the good thing about their being no budget for advertising (because it stars all black and brown people) is that it's cheap to own.

This film was produced by JuVee Productions,

the company Viola Davis owns with her husband Julius Tennon.
And this was most definitely a black and brown production.

SLIPPING INTO WHITE SUPREMACY THROUGH THE BACK DOOR

    Ted Cruz                                                                              Bobby Jindal

Rafael Cruz is on the ballot as “Ted Cruz.” Piyush Jindal is on the ballot as “Bobby Jindal.” Conservatives seem okay with the idea of a minority republican candidate, just so long as

A) he pushes an agenda which trumpets the cause of white America while ignoring his own ethnic people, and

B) he changes his name to something more [white]-sounding.

http://www.dailynewsbin.com/opinion/why-does-rafael-cruz-have-to-pretend-his-name-is-ted-cruz-to-appeal-to-republicans/21718/

I know that many people do not understand race as a "social construct."  I've also experienced people taking the words "social construct of race" to mean that race isn't real
when the response to race
when the outcomes of racism
are so very real
to those of us that belong
to the group most often on the receiving end
as opposed to the group on the dishing out end.

But it still surprises me, a little, when people are silly enough to think someone like Officer Brian Encinia, who was instrumental in causing Sandra Bland's death,  doesn't enjoy white privilege just because he supposedly marked "Mexican" on his voting registration.

Even if one has never heard the words "white" "passing" and "privilege" together the concept and benefits of white-passing privilege should be quite obvious.

All of this is not to say ethnic groups other than white can't be prejudice and bigoted (and racist in my opinion).  But paler people of color can "pass" Therefore they most definitely can execute "racism" from inside whiteness.

GOOGLED DICTIONARY DEFINITION

RACISM - the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

I understand why the "racism" definition popular among people of color, for now, includes a power dynamic and addresses the systemic. And I agree that white people are the only people in this country powerful enough to execute a racism systemic enough to be effective enough to block other groups from resources, jobs, and advancement for long periods of time.

However,  the redefining of the word "racism"  away from it's basic dictionary definition is a poor use of language.

Poor use of language 1:  The googled common definition captured above does not include a power dynamic. That means the "only white people can be racist" thing is not common knowledge. The purpose of language is to communicate. One word cannot have multiple basic meanings when used in a single context. This stops communication.

Poor use of language 2: When people of color outnumber white people will people of color be the racists using the power definition of racism?

Poor use of language 3: With the power definition of racism, will white people only cease to be the only racists when people of color enjoy more financial and political power than white people?
Who will define when this power line has been crossed? How many racial and ethnic groups will have to be across the line before "white people are the only ones who can be racist" switches to "only people of color can be racists?"

Let's pretend it's possible that all people of color band together and we have 51% of the financial and political power by 2050, will racism disappear or will the word "racism" disappear? (White folks are trying to do the latter right now.)
If the word "racism" disappears into the *power dynamic* confusion, will we turn into France erase white or non-white history  altogether then refuse to acknowledge differences at the very same time we're making one ethnic/religious group 60 - 70% of the prison population.( In France right now, the prison population is predominantly Muslim)

Poor use of language 4:  Donald Trump is probably a racist using most any definition of racism you can find. And in my opinion, he's still a racist if he visits South Africa or if he decides to live in South Africa. He's also a racist if he decides to visit Nigeria or if he decides to live in Nigeria. Donald Trump can be described as a racist where ever he goes and no matter how long he decides to stay there. And this picture of Trump is simpler to hold in one's mind and describe if the definitions of "racism" and "racist" being used are the basic dictionary terms.

All of this is why, in my opinion, the word "racism" (dictionary definition) and racist need to be qualified with the words "effective" and "systemic" when that's what you mean.

Using the basic definition of racism, it's easier to keep the conversation on track when talking about how Sandra Bland's death is an outcome of white supremacy and racism, regardless of whether or not Brian Encinia's marked "Mexican" on his voter registration card.  Encinia's police uniform, white phenotype, and white man's name (Brian)  allows him to be inside whiteness, as inside as "Ted" and "Bobby" from where I sit.

Surely, it's easy to see that Encinia executes behavior just like any other white male sure of supremacy further secured with a badge.

Rafael Cruz running for president as  Ted Cruz and
Piyush Jindal running as Bobby Jindal  shows us how powerful perceived whiteness is in this country as well.  However, George Zimmerman changing his appearance from a TV stereotypical Latino gang member that killed Trayvon Martin to a doughy, clean shaven almost-white boy for his murder trial reveals systemic racism's connection to varying degrees of whiteness even more clearly.

Stereotype fitting George Zimmerman up top
Whiter looking Zimmerman on the bottom

If it had been a latino-looking George Zimmerman out for tea and skittles that night with a crazy Bill Clinton look-alike running around, fondling his gun while looking for someone to stalk, then Zimmerman would have been the one killed and accused of being a thug. It would have been Zimmerman found guilty of his own murder.

Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, Brian Encinia, and George Zimmerman all have the ability to play the best race card there is in this country, the white one. And from where I sit, they continue to be masterfully played.

UNDERNEATH THE SAMENESS RHETORIC

This person who made this meme is trying to communicate things like: "I don't see color." "I am above seeing differences" "If everybody was above seeing differences, we'd all get along."
Some people will see the problem with this meme immediately and say, "They mean well." But I say the person that makes and embraces these kinds of things mean well for me-and-mine and for me-and-mine only.
Using race as an example: I keep thinking that the kind of person who makes this kind of meme tends to believe some of the same key things that the racist believes

1) difference is bad.
2) respecting differences is unnecessary.

That's why I can't trust people who love this kind of thing. I keep thinking that eventually there will be a difference seen in someone that is clearly *other* that cannot be denied, that will pierce the willful unconsciousness of the above it all person. And at that moment, Mr or Miss Above-It-All will have a 50/50 chance of moving from the noncommittal, non-racist position to rabid racist OR anti-racist.

Tim Wise might have been such a noncommittal person once. But the problem is that Dylann Roof might have been such a person once too.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic to say the chances are 50/50. But even if the chances of going from non-racist to rabid racist is 1 in 10 that's still too much for me. And staying pat where they are at non-committal non-racist? That position still enables racism.

SERENA WILLIAMS ADDRESSES MARIA SHARAPOVA BEING HIGHEST PAID ATHLETE

"If they want to market someone who is white and blond, that’s their choice. I have a lot of partners who are very happy to work with me. I can’t sit here and say I should be higher on the list because I have won more. I’m happy for her, because she worked hard, too. There is enough at the table for everyone.

We have to be thankful, and we also have to be positive about it so the next black person can be No. 1 on that list."

http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2015/08/serena-williams-responds-to-maria-sharapova-endorsement-gap/
SERENA handled this question with dignity and grace, as usual.

I'm not Serena.  Therefore, I can say that Serena should be higher on the list because Serena has won more.  I'm saying it.

I'm saying that it's 2015 and it's ridiculous that tall, white, thin is taking up more room at the table than it should be after all this time. Serena is absolutely right about the other black people that busted through doors ahead of her and that she's busting down doors for the black person coming up behind her. And, I'm so proud of her for coming right out and addressing race directly.

Yet, I don't have to pretend I think that white people are making "racial progress" at a reasonable rate of speed.

Sorry. Can't do it.

Has Maria Sharapova addressed race and the pay gap between her and Serena? Has she said something other than some vague "it's not fair" if she's said anything at all? Is Sharapova getting the question over and over like Serena is?

If Sharapova cannot be this direct, I wonder if anyone will attempt her to force her into a direct answer on her white privilege. I might ask her something like, "How does it feel to win so many of the endorsements without winning as many games as Serena Williams --just because you possess the ultimate race card that trumps all other race cards?"

ON FATHERS RAISING DAUGHTERS

1) Tell her you love and respect her. Teach her that love and respect, both, are always a two way street. If she experiences these things from childhood, she'll know when counterfeits are being offered as an adult.

2) Listen to her. Have her explain why she thinks what she thinks. Let her discover that she a good at thinking, discovering, and planning.

3) Pull out chairs for her. Play with her. Be affectionate towards her.

4) Tell her if she finds the beauty in others, the right others will find beauty in her.
(Then show her models in very long term relationships sans make-up. Pretty is as pretty does)

5)  Set expectations on how a man should treat her

6) Teach her that solitude is different from loneliness Teach her when to embrace loneliness and when to move away from it

7) Talk to her about avoiding men with too much to prove, about men who avoid their own vulnerability

8) Teach her self-sufficiency then how to trust and rely on another.

9) Protect her

10) Teach her to protect herself and those weaker than herself

11) Treat her mother with the love and respect that you expect men to treat her with when she is an adult.

12) Make sure she sees you, as her father, change your mind in response to what her mother has said from time to time.

NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN MAY BE SUED FOR 5 MILLION

Members of the Sistahs of the Reading Edge Book Club, that were kicked off the Napa Valley Wine Train for "laughing while black" have retained a lawyer, Waukeen McCoy

“There must be compensation for the humiliation suffered” McCoy told the San Francisco Chronicle.

FUTURE SIGNS OF RACIAL PROGRESS

POST RACIAL SOCIETY WILL HAVE ARRIVED WHEN:

1

People, especially black and brown people, will not watch cell phone video of a white police officer, (like Michael Slager) planting evidence on an unarmed, black dead body (like Walter Scott's) and ask, "Do you think he'll be charged with anything?"

2

People, especially black and brown people, probably will watch body cam video of a police officer, like Ray Tensing murdering someone with zero provocation. But they won't cheer like something special has happened when that officer is arrested an charged with murder

3

When police officers like Dante Servin shoot people like Rekia Boyd because she happened to be near a loud gathering defends himself saying "I thought he had a gun," the word  "coward" will be shouted by 90% of the multi-ethnic public and the "good" police officers alike. The Dante Servins of this world will go to jail where cowardly police officers who shoot unarmed people belong.

4

When white television and movie producers stop loving and promoting black people that they love precisely because black people can't stand them.  We will not know the names of people like Clarence Thomas, Raven Symone,  Whoopi Goldberg,  Don Lemon, Taye Diggs, Pharrel Williams, and Anthony Mackie (who said it's not hard for black actors to get work in Hollywood, just not talented enough and he said that BEFORE he made the Selma Oscar comment and before anybody knew who the heck he even was) We will never know the names of black folk like this BECAUSE they will make a negative black comment then disappear into oblivion where they belong.

You know what? I just don't get how white producers cannot figure out why adding certain black actors to projects gets them zero increase in black audience? Or does the fact that certain black famous and black actors aggravate us make their white audience so happy that it's profitable to hire the Uncle Toms, Internal Racism Sufferers, and seriously Brain Dead Respectability Politicians (Mark my words on Mackie. Let him have a big hit and get some real money. He's gonna make Don Lemon look like Malcom X)

When 1 and 2 happen, this will show me that black people have faith that the justice system works for them just like it does everyone else.

When 3 happens we'll know that white supremacy soaked police officers and their ever present fear of dark skinned people as wild animals capable of anything no longer reign supreme with police departments. Therefore, cowardice will be recognized as cowardice even when the unarmed, dead person is black, latino, native american, muslim, or....

When 4 happens, we'll know that #BlackOpinionsOfRepresentativeBlacknessMatters.

Now that I look at this again, I'm pretty sure 3 and 4 are going to have to happen before 1 and 2, aren't you?
