MICHELLE OBAMA AT DNC: FULL SPEECH

"When Obama first said that she wakes up every morning in a house built by slaves in a commencement address a month ago, right-wing commentators were quick to attack her as unpatriotic.

Instead of backing away from the sentiment, though, she expanded on it. She explained it. She offered it as evidence of American possibility."

Then this First Lady, often attacked based on her strength, her skin color, and her black experience, a woman accused of not being patriotic, flipped her critics during her Democratic National Convention Speech.

She endorsed Hillary, mentioned the possibilities that will be there for her daughters once a first woman president is elected, then turned Trump's theme of "Make America Great Again" into unpatriotic cynicism.

It was the speech of the night.

Please welcome
First Lady Michelle Obama

3:14
thank you so much

3:19
you know it's it's it's hard to believe that it has been eight years since i
3:25
first came to this convention to talk with you about why i thought my husband
3:30
should be President
3:35
remember how I told you about his character and conviction his decency and
3:42
His grace the traits that we've seen every day that he served our country in
3:48
the White House
3:52
I also told you about our daughters how they are the heart of our hearts
3:58
the center of our world and during our time in the White House we've had the
4:02
joy of watching them grow from bubbly little girls into poised young women a
4:08
journey that started soon after we arrived in Washington when they set off
4:14
with their first day at the new school
4:17
I will never forget that winter morning as i watched our girls just seven and
4:22
ten years old pile into those black SUVs with all those big men with guns and I
4:31
saw their little faces pressed up against the window and the only thing I
4:35
could think was what have we done
4:39
see because at that moment I realized that our time in the White House would
4:45
form the foundation for who they would become and how well we manage this
4:50
experience could truly make a break them
4:53
that is what Barack and I think about every day as we try to guide and protect
4:58
our girls to the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight
5:04
how we urge them to ignore those who question their fathers citizenship or
5:11
fake
5:12
yeah
5:16
we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not
5:23
represent the true spirit of this country
5:29
how we explain that when someone is cool or acts like a bully you don't stoop to
5:35
their level.
They know our motto is when they go low we go high
5:46
with every word we utter with every action we take we know our kids are
5:52
watching us
5:53
we as parents are the most important role models and let me tell you Barack
5:58
and I take that same approach to our jobs as president and first lady because
6:03
we know that our words and actions matter not just to our girls but the
6:08
children across this country
6:10
kids kids who tell us I saw you on TV
6:14
I wrote a report on you for school kids like the little black boy who looked up
6:20
at my husband his eyes wide with hope and he wondered is my hair like yours
6:26
and make no mistake about it this November when we go to the polls that is
6:34
what we're deciding not democrat or republican not left or right now in this
6:39
election and every election is about who will have the power to shape our
6:46
children for the next four or eight years of their lives
6:55
and I
6:57
i am here tonight because in this election
7:01
there is only one person who i trust with that responsibility
7:06
only one person who i believe is truly qualified to be President of the United
7:10
States and that is our friend Hillary Clinton
7:33
I trust I trust Hillary to lead this country because I've seen her lifelong
7:40
devotion to our nation's children not just her own daughter who she has raised
7:46
to perfection
7:47
but what every child who needs a champion kids who take the long way to
7:55
school to avoid the game's kids who wonder how they'll ever afford college
8:00
kids whose parents don't speak a word of English but dream of a better life
8:05
kids who look to us to determine who and what they can be
8:10
you see Hillary has spent decades doing the relentless thankless work to
8:15
actually make a difference in their lives
8:22
yeah
8:23
advocating for kids with disabilities as a young lawyer fighting for children's
8:28
health care at first lady and for quality childcare in the Senate and when
8:34
she didn't win the nomination eight years ago she didn't get angry or
8:39
disillusion
8:43
yeah
8:52
we did not
8:54
Hilary did not pack up and go home because as a true public servant Hilary
9:00
knows that this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointed
9:10
she probably stepped up to serve our country once again as Secretary of State
9:16
traveling the globe to keep our kids safe and look there were plenty of
9:23
moments when Hillary could have decided that this work was too hard that the
9:27
price of public service was too high that she was tired of being picked apart
9:32
for how she looks or how she talks or even how she laughs but here's the thing
9:39
what I admire most about Hillary is that she never buckled under pressure she she
9:48
never takes the easy way out and Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in
9:56
her life
10:03
and when I think about the kind of President that I want for my girls and
10:09
all our children
10:10
that's what i want i want someone with the proven strength to persevere
10:18
someone who knows this job and takes it seriously
10:21
someone who understands that the issues of president faces are not black and
10:26
white
10:26
it cannot be boiled down to 140 characters look because
10:41
you win
10:42
when you have the nuclear codes at your fingertips and the military in your
10:49
command
10:50
you can't make snap decisions yet you can't have a thin skin or tendency to
10:56
lash out you need to be steady and measured and well-informed
11:08
I want a president with a record of public service someone whose life's work
11:15
shows our children that we don't chase fame and fortune for ourselves we fight
11:20
to give everyone a chance to succeed and and we get back
11:27
even when we're struggling ourselves because we know that there is always
11:32
some work one more soft and there but for the grace of God go lie i want a
11:39
president who will teach our children that everyone in this country matters a
11:45
president who truly believes in the vision that our founders put forth all
11:49
those years ago that we are all created equal each of the love part of the great
11:54
American story and one crisis hits
11:59
we don't turn against each other
12:02
now we we listen to each other we lean on each other because we are always
12:07
stronger together
12:14
and i am here tonight because I know that that is the kind of President that
12:20
Hillary Clinton will be and that's why in this election
12:24
I'm with her
12:42
you think
12:44
understand that the president is about one thing and one thing only
12:49
it's about leaving something better for kids that how we've always move this
12:56
country forward by all of us coming together on behalf of our children
13:00
folks who volunteer to coach that team to teach that sunday school class
13:05
because they know it takes a village
13:08
kilos of every color and Creed who wear the uniform and risked their lives to
13:15
keep passing down those blessings of liberty police officers and the
13:19
protesters in Dallas who all desperately want to keep our children safe
13:25
people who lined up in orlando to donate blood
13:29
because they could have been their son their daughter in that Club
13:34
yeah
13:40
leaders like Tim Kaine
13:45
yeah
13:49
show me
13:50
to show our kids what decency and devotion look like leaders like Hillary
13:56
Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those
14:02
cracks in that highest and hardest glass ceiling and so she probably break
14:08
lifting all the work tomorrow
14:10
with you
14:13
that is the story of this country
14:18
the story that has brought me to the stage tonight
14:22
the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage the shame of
14:27
servitude the king of segregation but who kept on striving and hoping and
14:33
doing what needed to be done so that today
14:36
I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves
14:47
and i watch
14:49
my daughters so beautiful intelligent black young women playing with their
14:55
dogs on the White House lawn
15:06
candy
15:07
and because of Hillary Clinton my daughters and all our sons and daughters
15:16
now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States
15:37
home
15:38
don't let anyone ever tell you that this country is in great that somehow we need
15:46
to make it right again because this right now is the greatest country on
15:51
Earth
16:00
and as my my daughter's prepare to set out into the world
16:05
I want a leader who is worthy of that truth
16:09
a leader who is worthy of my girls promise and all our kids promised a
16:14
leader who will be guided every day by the love and hope and impossibly big
16:20
dreams that we all have for our children
16:23
so in the selection we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for
16:29
the best
16:30
we cannot afford to be tired or frustrated or cynical no hear me that we
16:38
now and november we need to do what we did eight years ago in four years ago
16:47
yeah
16:51
we need to knock on every door we need to get out every vote we need to for
16:58
every last ounce of our passion and our strength and our love for this country
17:03
into elected Hillary Clinton as president of the united states of america
17:13 Get To Work
17:14 Thank you all
