FOR WOMEN WHO ARE DIFFICULT TO LOVE

Warsan Shire
you are a horse running alone
and he tries to tame you
compares you
to an impossible highway
to a burning house

says you are blinding him
that he could never leave you
forget you
want anything but you

you dizzy him,
you are unbearable
every woman before or after you
is doused in your name

you fill
his mouth
his teeth ache with memory of taste
his body just a long shadow seeking yours

but you are always
too intense
frightening in the way you want him
unashamed and sacrificial
he tells you that no man can live up to

the one who lives in your head

and you tried to change didn't you?

closed your mouth more
tried to be
softer,
prettier,
less volatile,
less awake

but even when sleeping
you could feel him
travelling away from you in his dreams

so what did you want to do love,
split his head open?

you can't make homes out of human beings
someone should have already told you that
and if he wants to leave
then let him leave

you are

terrifying

and strange

and beautiful

something not everyone knows how to love.

A WOMAN OWNING HER SEXUALITY ISN'T BASED ON SUPPLY AND DEMAND

...BUT SEXUAL OBJECTIFICATION IS

a repost

"[H]ow do you raise a boy to respect women
if you can't get your husband, father, brothers
to respect women?

Seems like a circle without end, [doesn't it?]

But the thing I DO KNOW is
that we as women
are going to have to stand apart
from these backward men,
wherever they are,

....and wrangle our sisters back into line as well.

The demand for
cheap, easy and objectifying sexuality
(on stage like Lady Gaga etc)
is always going to be there.
We have to decide not to supply it.

We cannot mistake THAT for "sexual freedom."

Sorry to be rude. But I've seen some younger feminists defend some behaviors, defend some beliefs that would have to climb 10 flights of stairs to rise to the level of stupid. Deciding that your desire to be mostly naked in public is synonymous with ownership of your sexuality is one of those beliefs.

Thank goodness, by the way,  it seems like two-thirds to three-quarters of black and brown feminists are not  going for this nonsense, regardless of age, no matter how often it's dished out. Some 1000 commenters on a black feminist page recently pushed back against this idea with a clearly articulated "NO!"  They made it clear that there were not "proud" of the Beyonce for "owning her sexuality"  by wearing *the naked dress* to the Met Gala in 2015.

But there were also half as many who drank the coolish-aide and defended Bey

Dear Misguided Feminist,

Yes, it was bad when women had to be covered from head to toe like American Gothic Woman on the left - in order to be seen as good and worthy of respect. In the times reflected by *American Gothic Woman*  women's  sexually was as good as caged then put in an elevator that was sealed in cement then thrown into the ocean; Women did not own their sexuality in any way, shape, or form. But requiring people (not just women) be clothed in public isn't the enemy of all sexual freedom. Female nakedness  isn't synonymous with owning one's sexuality. If it was men would dress like the model below all the time.

 Male Model Owning His Sexuality
Fashion-ist-oh fashion with a strategic hole
shows a man's flaccid penis
(Paris Fashion Show link below)

The mostly-naked video vixen --who allows men to throw cash at her thong-bare ass then slide a credit card down her crack  is not someone to idolize. Believe it or not, the behavior displayed in Nelly's "Tip Drill" is not something to aspire to in the name of owning one's sexuality.

Rhianna's 2013 or 2014 even more naked dress --the same Rhianna, who has been banned from social media at least once for nakedness(Twitter?) -- may not be exactly the same as Credit Card Ass, who doesn't appear  to deserve a name. But I don't know that Be' and RhiRhi are any free-er than Credit Card Ass or any of the other sisters in the 'Tip Drill' video. (I refuse to provide a link)

The women in that music video were clearly high...high on the attention of men. And people who are addicted to anything, including getting men excited, are not free.

Regardless of what conclusion you come to about Beyonce and Rhianna suffering from the very same addiction as Credit Card Ass and the gang, there's one thing most feminists should be able to agree on:

If what a PERSON is wearing would get her or him arrested in 99 out of 100 grammar schools, that outfit is fit for private dinners, private shows,  and the bedroom, not the street or the stage.

That said, men being able to police women's clothing and behavior should be fought. We, as women, have a lot more freedom and choices about our appearance and our sexiness (or non-sexiness) and I'm glad. And as much as I hate the term "slut shaming" I do agree that slut shaming  should be fought. For so long as the Leonardo Di Caprios are rumored to be screwing 10 to 20 "models" a night sans any name calling --that isn't REALLY envy in disguise-- that battle is on!

However,

showing as much of your ass

as you can possibly get away with

has little or nothing to do with owning your sexuality

but tons to do with

being weak-minded enough

to believe you can't even feel alive

unless

you see desire

in the eyes of every man you meet.*

This is not sexual freedom, ownership or your sexual self, or even sexual power. It never has been has been. It is an enslavement of the mind that is as old as humanity. The feeling of power that depends on the reaction of men is entirely from outside self. And something about Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez's behavior (Met Gala Naked Dress Competitors) that seems very familiar.

I mean, don't men who have to have a flashy car and lots of money to attract women seem shallow and powerless in very much the same way as naked-as-possible woman? Aren't they flip sides of the same coin?

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad feminists gave up trying to B-minus versions of men. The giant shoulder pads of the 1980s were symbolic of that attempt. And I'm glad today's female feminists have decided that there is power in the ways that women do things, in the ways that women approach things. Some of our ways are actually better. And part of seeking equality will be seeking to prove some of women's ways are better and bringing men into the light. But along the way we are going have to be a little more conscious and a lot more self-observant if we're going to look forward and understand that seeking a bad thing's opposite is not always good (American Gothic Woman vs. Credit Card Ass)

Skin and Image Bleaching Controversy Left
Black Face Coat Controversy Right
Romanticizing IKE BEATING TINA in a song, post-feminism claims, not shown

By the way, while intelligence isn't the end-all/be-all of everything good either, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that thinking isn't the strong suite of most actors, singers and whatever Kim K is. They probably shouldn't be looked to for anything except acting and singing -- and maybe their ability to move large numbers of people to support the cause of your choice. What they do or say probably has little or nothing to do with a grown, thinking woman owning her sexuality.

Besides, if a woman's career depends on that woman shaking her mostly naked butt for people who have paid $200 a ticket to see said butt, then where does the ownership of that sexuality lie?

That is, if Beyonce, Rhianna, and Gaga know that they dare not fail to supply the exact sexuality that the ticket holders expect and demand, then don't the ticket buyers own their sexuality? Don't managers and record companies dependent on the naked booty shaking own part of their sexuality too? Couldn't they be sued for turning into Joni Mitchell or Whitney all of a sudden, fully clothed for an entire two or three shows in a row?

I don't think Beyonce, Rhianna, and Gaga own a damn except their material possessions. But maybe that's just me.

Forget Beyonce
"Beyond The Lights" shows a better example of a woman coming to own her sexuality
Good for young teens I would think

UNFAIR AND LOVELY CAMPAIGN

Feeling Rebloggy

Melanin appreciation social media campaigns
like #MelaninMonday,#BlackOutDay and #FlexinMyComplexion have deeply resonated with black women and girls pushing against the twisted status quo that says light skin is always more beautiful. But the pushing extends past the black community as the need to celebrate and accept darker skin tones reigns prevalent just about everywhere.

Three University Of Texas students Sri Lankan Yogarajah sisters, Mirusha and Yanusha and Pax Jones who is African-American are working to continue dismissing colorism wherever it may be continuing to rule.
Jones photographed the sisters for a photo series focused on brown skin and as the three talked, the #unfairandlovely tag was born.

FEMINIST

SERIOUS AS-A-HEART-ATTACK GAMER

This is from a few years back, 2012. But it's a perfect introduction to who this woman is. I first saw her as a guest star or panelist on a Bill Maher show. I had no idea who she was but her brain seemed second to none more than once.

I quasi-followed her career after that,  discovering shortly after her Bill Maher stints that she was a comedienne. She did some work on the improv nearly-a-game-show "Who's Line Is It Anyway?"

She seemed like she would be a natural feminist. And with a little research I found she was one. But her advocacy was in the area of gaming. I admit that made me blink more than once. Not that this area doesn't need some serious feminist attention. I still remember seeing my 3 year old nephew win his race car game and watching his avatar get a kiss from this sleezy half-dressed hooker-looking chick.

My sister-in-law played every game he got before he did after she saw that.

So I'm glad Aisha has her eye on cleaning up gaming.

"[After] being invited to host the 2012 E3 press conference, [some] were not so pleased. In typical troll fashion, she received a ton of comments complaining that she knew nothing about gaming. Tyler responded to her haters on Facebook in a perfect takedown of their "complaints."

"I play.
I've played since I was a little kid.
Since I begged my dad to buy me a Nintendo LCD Donkey Kong, Jr.
Since I blew through three weeks' allowance playing Defender at the laundromat.
Since you were a twinge in the left side of your daddy's underoos.

I've been a gamer since I made friends with a girl in the 5th grade just to get at her Atari.
Since I missed the bus playing Galaga after school.
Since I missed the start of Return of the Jedi playing Tempest in the theater lobby.

You think you know. You don't know.

I've been a gamer since before you could read.
Since I aced midterms after staying up all night playing Evil Tetris.
Since I became dorm champ at Leisure Suit Larry.
Since I double-wielded on Time Crisis 3 at Fuddrucker's.

I was a voice in not one, but two major video game titles.
I hosted the Reach Beta tutorial.
I was a Gears of War superfan panelist at ComicCon.
I hosted the Ubisoft presser at E3 2012.
I didn't do any of it for the money.
For most I got paid next to nothing, and for some, less than that.

I did it because I love video games.
Because I've dreamt since I was a kid of being in one of the games I love.
How many games have you done voices for?
How many cons have you repped at?
Your buddy's Unreal Tournament garage deathmatch doesn't count.

I go to E3 each year because I love video games.
Because new titles still get me high.
Because I still love getting swag.
Love wearing my gamer pride on my sleeve.
People ask me what console I play.
Motherfucker, ALL of them.

I get invited to E3 because real gamers know I'm a gamer.
I don't do it for the money.
I have plenty of money.
I don't do it for the fame.
Fuck fame.
I do it because I love video games.

I don't give out my gamertag because I don't want a mess of noob jackholes lining up
to assassinate me on XBL.
I don't give a shit what you think about my gamerscore.
I don't play to prove a point.
I don't play to be the best.
I play because I love it.

I play."

Her Views On Sexual Harassment

"Men need to speak up when they see harassment, either online or in the real world. Period. Just imagine that this woman is your girlfriend, mother or sister. Would it be okay for someone to treat one of them the way they are treating the woman in front of you? If you can find a way to empathize by relating to the women you care about, it quickly becomes clear that this behavior is unacceptable. And men are more likely to respond to the comments and scrutiny of other men when they are harassing women, as they can't dismiss their disapproval as gender-motivated. It doesn't have to be a speech. Just a simple, "Dude. Not cool." can make someone reexamine their behavior."

THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT WAS BACK THEN: ON BLACK PANTHER WOMEN

Continued from
BLACK WOMEN, A TASTE OF POWER
http://thankherforsurviving.blogspot.com/2016/03/black-panther-women-taste-of-power.html

Elaine Brown's Autobiography, "A Taste Of Power: A Black Woman's Story, starts out by spending quite some time describing Elaine growing up in a more obviously "color struck" black world, a fatherless, light-skinned daughter of a success seeking, respectability politics seeking mother who sends her away from poor black girl peers to predominantly white schools.

At first I didn't know why we were reading so much about her childhood. But her brave reveal goes a long way toward explaining Brown's wanting to be white for a time; her affairs with white Hollywood elite that turn out to be a source of Panther money;  and her almost addictive behavior toward sex and men in the Black Panther Party, including Eldridge Cleaver (who's book "Soul On Ice" provides much funding for the BPP) and Huey Newton.

Brown doesn't meet Huey until half way through they book yet still manages to be the center of absolutely everything in her world once she meets this man-made God. Somehow the book seems fairly light on covering actual his speeches and ideas. Then again, maybe this should have been expected as this book was truly limited to Brown's personal experience.

Every time Brown related the details of Newton paying attention to her, by "patting her on her fanny" or deigning to sleep with her after he'd moved onto someone else,  I found myself reminded, again and again, of that white woman who was recently in the news, the one whose biggest claim to fame was losing her virginity to David Bowie when she was 15.  It made me wonder if Brown and  almost-white-Marsha, who was also 15 when she explained what Panther womanhood is, tells similar stories of Black Panthers to this day.

Eldrige's Photo of Huey Newton
Newton reportedly hated it.///I did too

SEX
Brown was bad about mentioning dates in her autobiography. As near as I can tell Elaine Brown was Huey Newton's exclusive girlfriend for 2 months or 2 years before he replaced her with Gwen, a softer, non-panther-like woman. According to an obviously envious Brown, Gwen would cook, clean, and sex Netwon then get out of the way quietly when Newton wanted to have sex with someone else --even when that someone else was his ex-Queen, Elaine.

I tried to go back and find out if there was some sort of free love thing going on that I'd missed. I must have missed something because Brown slept with Ericka Huggins husband too.  John Huggins seduced Brown into the Black Panthers in the first place, and while his wife was pregnant. Yet there's no mention of Brown feeling awkward or guilty when she and Ericka spend time together.  Brown even names her daughter "Ericka" after Ericka Huggins.

But it was Huey that Elaine mainly hung onto romantically speaking once she meets him. It seems like every waking moment was about what he wanted or didn't want-- even when he was losing his mind.  I can't even tell if her drooling over him was entirely romantic.  As I currently read David Hilliard’s book, "This Side Of Glory," his love, the intensity of his worship(?) of Huey Newton was no less for it being non-sexual.

 PHYSICAL ABUSE

Brown would eventually be beat up for "hours" by one of her Panther “comrades,” Steve, before a crucial meeting with Motown’s Suzanne De Passe (who would later become Brown’s first female friend) Huey wouldn’t call this beating a violation of panther regulations between “equal” comrades which would require Steve’s “discipline,” according to Panther rules, because Huey deemed it “personal” and "not Panther business."

Prior to Brown's rise to power, Bobby Seale would eventually order Elaine to be disciplined. As a result she was beaten with a whip, across her back, for an infraction. She takes it. But she also tells Huey she’ll never endure it again.  Not long after this, Huey has Bobby Seale and Elaine run for political office in Oakland together.

Huey eventually beats Bobby Seale with a whip for failing to defend Huey’s name in a way a coke and cognac soaked Huey thought was appropriate. Rockstar Activist Huey, now calling himself “The Servant,” then kicks Bobby Seale out of the Panthers.

David Hilliard, another childhood friend of Huey's and original Panther, is kicked out.

Brown is slapped by Huey too at one point. But, once more, she doesn't leave him or The Panthers.

ELAINE BROWN IN CHARGE VIA ENFORCER

When Huey fled to Cuba to avoid being arrested for beating up his tailor and also a separate murder, he left Elaine in charge -- probably because she was the only left at the top that knew anything.

Because the Panthers are sexist and misogynistic, Huey makes Larry Henson her chief of staff and essentially tells him to be an enforcer for Elaine. And Elaine secures Larry's instructions by giving him fine clothes, fine wines, and by sleeping with Larry.

One of the first things Brown does for the Black Panther Party is to start filling empty positions up again, by merit. She seems to say she filled up to half of the empty positions with women which, according to her, would have started a much louder black male rebellion if it weren’t for Larry cracking heads for her on the regular --one of those heads being Steve’s, the man who beat her up.

Steve, a hoodlum’s hoodlum, got beat up so bad he wasn’t seen again after Larry's BPP “disciplinary” session was over.

Eventually Brown is accused by a young male panther of being a "man-hating lesbian." Brown realizes that this is code for “feminist,” frequently used whenever a man wants to knock a woman off her feet in that era. It is at this point (in the last quarter of the book) that she finally realizes that sexism is as real and as important as racism.

Elaine gets money flowing into the BPP and the survival programs back on track, especially the panther created Oakland School. She stops the panthers from brutalizing each other with whips (ala Slavery that 'we're following Che-Guevara self-delusion be damned)  Eventually, she does some political maneuvering in California so that Huey can come home without going to jail.

HUEY RETURNS

When Newton gets back he says he won’t interfere but partner with Brown.

But then two things happen:

1) A Newton friend, "Big Bob" breaks the rules in defiance of Brown. When he is arrested, Brown wants to leave him there for a few days as punishment. Newton insists on no punishment for him at all and demands Brown release funds to get him out of jail immediately. She does it.

2) A few pages later, a panther named Regina Davis reprimands one of the male panthers for not completing a task that she assigned him at The Oakland School. Words are exchanged. Brown finds out that day(?) that Newton authorized Davis’ discipline without a word to her as his "partner" in leadership.

Davis discipline resulted in her being beaten so badly, by three or four male “comrades” that her jaw was broken.

When Elaine objects and objects and objects to this as "discipline," Huey will not stand up to the black men who beat Davis.  Instead Newton finally says he'll bring it up before the mostly male Black Panther Central Committee – that she was only ever able to control by using Larry the enforcer, who had gotten so full himself that he'd started threatening Brown himself  (over her refusal to pick up his clothes behind him and “contradicting him” in front of others.) Upon Newton’s return, Larry moved back to being Huey’s right hand man.

Regina Davis and other black women will eventually leave the Black Panthers after this event.  And this was no small loss. According to the documentary, "The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution" the Black Panthers was up to 60% female at  one point.

ELAINE'S FINAL DAY

Surprisingly enough, Elaine who still seems in love and in awe of Newton, leaves the Black Panther Party before the meeting over the beating of Regina Davis takes place.  And this is where she ends her association with the Black Panthers and her story.

CONCLUDING QUESTIONS:

If Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, David Hilliard, and Eldridge Cleaver in Oakland were the root of “The Black Panthers” how is it possible the entire tree wasn’t poisoned by the sexism and misogyny aimed at black women?

If half the voices were pretty much silenced, doesn’t that mean the Black Panthers were always operating at half strength? And doesn’t this also mean COINTELPRO can only take half, maybe even a quarter of the credit for the destruction of The Black Panthers?

If the Panther leadership hadn’t been formed around the macho, formed around who’s the toughest man, would one or some of the Black Panthers (the Central Committee) gotten together to reduce Newton’s role or remove him once he became unstable enough to destabilize the entire Black Panther Party?
Elaine Brown seems like she only had eyes for men that were stripping her naked with their eyes And she nearly admits as much in the book. And I have to assume that this is why the picture of what was happening to other Black Panther women is so skimpy in this book. Even so, if this book represents Brown experience only, and she was relatively protected due to being so closely associated with Newton and other higher ranked Panthers, don’t we have to worry about what was happening to the rank-and-file Panther women? Most of us know Kathleen Cleaver was being beaten by her husband, Eldridge. Brown slept with Newton again and again AFTER he said Steve’s beating her was a personal problem.

So what was happening to other Black Panther Women? (That PBS documentary mentioning male panther’s thinking of black female panthers as sex object is almost a joke as far as that documentary showing any concern for what really happened to women in the Black Panther party.

Was Angela Davis, who was in and then out of the Panthers with a quickness, one of the few female panthers in California who had an adequate sense of self-worth?

How much am I supposed to excuse all this in the name of “That’s just the way it was back then?”

And if I do decide to believe in “That’s just the way it was back then” for The Black Panthers, don’t I have to believe in “That’s just the way it was back then” for white people too?”

EVOKING THE MULATTO

Evoking the Mulatto is a multimedia project examining black mixed identity in the 21st century, through the lens of the history of racial classification in the United States. It was created by the filmmaker Lindsay Catherine Harris, and features compelling interviews with young Americans as they reflect on the complex process of defining themselves. This is the first of four episodes

http://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/471885/mulatto-its-not-a-cool-word/

" 'MULATTO' IS NOT A COOL WORD"

ETYMOLOGY  (noun) - the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history. [Definition from google]

ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD "MULE"  - 1590s, "offspring of a European and a black African," from Spanish or Portuguese mulato "of mixed breed," literally "young mule," from mulo "mule," from Latin mulus (fem. mula) "mule" (see mule (n.1)); possibly in reference to hybrid origin of mules (compare Greek hemi-onos "a mule," literally "a half-ass;" as an adjective, "one of mixed race"). As an adjective from 1670s. Fem. mulatta is attested from 1620s; mulattress from 1805.

BLACK PANTHER WOMEN: "A TASTE OF POWER"

“That's just the way it was back to then."

I hate these words. I probably always did. But I remember learning to hate them with specific intensity after hearing them come out a white woman’s mouth so regularly it was like an echo that never ends.

These words were used to justify white racism executed in any time period between 40 years to 400 years ago. She wouldn't use it to dismiss anything she was relatively sure her ancestors had no part in, like lynching. But she’d use it excuse damn near anything else.

After a while it became clear that she thought that any white adult born 40 years before she was born should automatically be excused as if a child that wasn’t thinking clearly. It was as if she thought a 50 year old white man couldn’t know what he was really doing when

--he stood on picket lines outside elementary schools, hollering epithets at 5 year old black children like Ruby Bridges

-he taught his white son to shame black children by making it obvious he couldn’t bear to touch their hands when making change or passing back the weekly spelling test

-he taught his white daughter that it was perfectly acceptable to invite everybody (white) in her class to her birthday party except the three black kids and the one Mexican child.

“That's just the way it was back then” doesn’t cover a spite-filled heart that beats within the chest of a person that needs to feel more important than another, 40 years ago or 400 years ago either. It doesn't explain:

-White bus drivers stomping on the gas and then brakes in a deliberate attempt to make black people standing over empty "white seats" fall to floor --even if one of those black people is a woman holding an infant.
       -  Seeing a peaceful group of black protesters as a violent mob “stirring up peaceful white citizens” (peaceful--for so long as the white supremacy isn't disturbed)
        - Seeing talking back to a disrespectful white police officer as an offense that justifies a beating, arresting, or killing when skin is dark

“That's just the way it was back to then"
doesn’t work
because empathy is empathy
no matter what year it is
or how primitive the schooling
or how primitive the technology was,
40 years ago or 400 years ago.

I hate this phrase when it comes to racism.

And I hate it just as much when it comes to sexism and misogyny.

This is why I’ve never been able to make myself understand, not even for a second, why Huey P Newton, Bobby Seale, David Hilliard and other “leaders” of the Panthers, would put Eldridge Cleaver in charge an outhouse much less make him “Minister of Information”

And reading Elaine Brown’s "A Taste Of Power"  leads me to believe that they adopted Cleaver BECAUSE OF and not IN SPITE OF Cleaver’s "Soul On Ice" where Cleaver admits to raping black women as practice for raping white women is just galling.

Elaine Brown - top
Huey Newton - bottom
MISOGYNY IGNORED
IS A BEAST
THAT BITES BLACKS BACK

Elaine Brown, who would eventually be the only female leader of The Black Panthers, read “Soul On Ice” early in her Panther career, went to meet him at a quasi-social Panther gathering and flirted with him, found him attractive. It wasn’t until a few years later in Algiers when Cleaver was threatening to kill her for not agreeing to help him split The Panthers into a *gun war revolutionary camp* and a *reformers survival program camp* that Brown realizes that Cleaver is the predator, rapist, and coward –just as he had announced he was in his book, "Soul On Ice."

According to Brown, after many a macho pissing match between the Newton/Hilliard camp and the Cleaver camp, Cleaver is kicked out of The Black Panthers, taking a large number of people with him and also leaving a large number of members Panther members that remained disillusioned.

Weakened by the battles with Eldridge, the survival programs get primary focus while the FBI, via their COINTELPRO program, is using the police to lock panthers up across the country. The police and FBI are apparently flat out murdering others like Fred Hampton

The Breakfast Program for children, the Health Clinic and the Oakland Schools are Panther survival programs. Money is being gotten for these programs; for bail, and for the defense attorneys needed to get panthers out of jail by any shady means necessary --some of them not legal-- which means the Panthers are picking up black enemies as well as black friends as they go.

During the recent white-washed PBS documentary on The Black Panthers, one woman says that The Black Panthers was like an elephant standing before a group of blind people, some near trunk, tusks, or tail. Instead of saying one’s perception of the Black Panthers depended on where one was standing she said,

A panther’s perception of The Black Panthers

depended on which part
of The Black Panther’s you served in.

Elaine Brown sounds like she served near the back half of elephant, in Los Angeles, moving further and further back as she got to closer and closer Oakland National Headquarters, where the Black Panthers originated.

PANTHER WOMAN HOOD
During one of Brown’s first trips to the Oakland Chapter, Bobby Seale has a 15 year old girl describe what Panther Womanhood

-        -
"Marsha was a child, maybe fifteen years old...nearly white," is held up by Bobby Seale as a model Panther woman. Seale commands Marsha to
"Tell [Elaine] here what a Brother has to do to get some from you."
To which Marsha responds:

First of all, a Brother's got to be righteous. He's got to be a Panther. He's got to be able to recite the ten-point platform and program, and be ready to off the pig and die for the People.... Can't no motherfucker get no p*ssy from me unless he can get down with the party.... A sister has to learn to shoot as well as to cook, and be ready to back up the Brothers. A Sister's got to know the ten-point platform and program by heart.... A Sister has to give up the p*ssy when the Brother is on his job and hold it back when he's not. `Cause Sisters got p*ssy power

Elaine and some of the other women from the Los Angeles Chapter like Ericka Huggins are horrified by Marsha’s “performance”, and especially horrified by all the men in the room shaking their heads up and down in agreement to Marsha’s theory of Black Panther Womanhood.

Elaine says that she, Ericka Huggins, and two other women get to be known as “The L.A. Clique” due to their objection to this characterization of women in the panthers. She also makes it clear that this unacceptable behavior does not go on in the Los Angeles Chapter.

However, Elaine seems to act out “P*ssy Power” between this halfway point in the book and the end at least three times. Huey even says she has “a $12,000 p*ssy” after she sleeps with and secures money from another white Hollywood executive.*
