The change is coming!

It has already happened within groups of black feminists and womanists. But soon, the same change will move through the rest of the black community.

•  The first wave will begin with non-feminist black women.

 They will demand that black men include them every single time they talk about race and racism and be especially irked -- no IRATE --- when black men do NOT talk about the effect of racism on black women when the women's situation in the same job IS WORSE.

•  The wave after that will come from black men with black daughters

These black men will speak on the plight of black men and black women at the same time whenever they speak about race and racism's effect. However, they will not confront their brothers. They will not do clean up on aisle 3 by taking black men who forget black women exist (when talking about racism) to task.  

•  The third wave will come from black men with black daughters who do feel responsible for checking their boys because they know these fools are raising sons and daughters that might affect his girl children...or worst his boy children.  

These black men will become irate and talk about other black men like dogs when they do NOT talk about the effect of racism on black women whenever they talk about racism's effect on black men --especially when the situation for black women IS WORSE than it is for black men

• The fourth wave will come forth from black men who do NOT HAVE CHILDREN but DO realize they have black wives, lovers,girlfriends, sisters, aunties, and female cousins that they care about more than they care about themselves.

These black men will become irate and talk about other black men like dogs when they do NOT talk about the effect of racism on black women in the same job --especially when the situation for black women IS WORSE than it is for black men

I don't care what Nate has said before or since. But I'd like this to never leave his lips again. White people don't get to whine about the life's unfair pain while not acknowledging white privilege. Black men don't get to whine about e-race-sure unless they talk about black women's e-race-sure too--especially when the black female e-race-sure is worse due to the racism and sexism combined.


Some artifacts of racism really ARE specific to black men. I think? But most things aren't.

Black men going to jail 6x the rate of white men? Okay. Black women are going to jail at a rate of more than 3x the rate of white women. That doesn't give black people --men and women both--  license to ignore what's happening to black women

School to Prison pipeline exists for black boys? Okay. School to Prison Pipeline exists for black girls too. AND I've also read of a school to poverty pipeline exists for girls as well. I don't know if the pipelines for black girls overlap at all, but it's not a completely wild @$$ guess to assume these pipelines add to one another as well depending how and when you do the counting.

Dear Black Men,

Black women hold up half the sky.

Forget the "Queen" crap. We know you're really saying you're going to give us the world on a platter and address us as "Queen" for so long as we as acknowledge you're the one that's really important, the one that's really making all the decisions, and that we don't get to be in charge of jack unless you die. We don't need fake worship. We need respect as if we're more than half of the black population. We need partnership.

Yes, I again acknowledge that I just had an extended Petty Crocker Moment.

But if it's time to get petty with white women feminists and demand they clean up their own crap then it's waaay past time for petty with black men, especially those that are supposedly pro-black. They remember themselves and forget black women way too often.

This crap irks the hell out of me.  Yeah, I know he "just forgot" Black men are always "just forgetting" And a lot of black women follow them in "just forgetting." A lot of black people "just forget" to show up for black women dead at the hands of police in the same numbers they do for black men. They forget so much that the hashtag #SayHerName had to be added back to a black female created movement called #BlackLivesMatter.

I'm petty. And I'm here to stay petty. Stop forgetting black women. If Chris Rock can remember us most times he speaks extensively on race, then other black men can too.

Seriously though? We need to boycott The New Blacks. The reason they got the jobs they have in the first place is to diversify the program and ATTRACT US.

Between Whoopi and Raven on this show ALONE, white producers SHOULD have to decide whether the controversial things these idiots say is going to attract ENOUGH WHITE people to the show to make it worth losing people of color.

We, people of color, are 1/3 of the population. WE CAN DO IT NOW. If white people were enough to keep these shows on the air, Whoopi wouldn't have a damn job. Time to retire her black elitist @$$

But, I'm not even willing to call this a baby step to tell you the truth.  

If the gender and race percentages polled by the LA Times are accurate, that would account for an increase from 23% women to 46% women members. African American members would see less growth, from 2% to 4%.

Last I checked, black people were 13% of the population not 2 percent or 4 percent. But if women (mostly white) don't go through the door first, we don't go through either. So I suppose I have to be some what happy about this.

IDRIS ELBA IS TALKING ABOUT BLACK REPRESENTATION IN MOVIES 

ELBA'S IN ENGLAND BUT THIS IS STILL RELEVANT

Things are so bad over there in Great Britain, that black actors come here to the United States to work -- which keeps Black American actors out of work.

I hate to complain, since that's how we got Idris. But Ava DuVernay actually said she went out of her way to hire a Black Brit for "Selma" in a rather snooty interview (I'm not holding it against her. She could be right about better quality actors coming from there for all I know. But as long as they KEEP coming, there's not enough investment in Black American Actors.)

The other reason I'm not so hot on British actors coming over here is that, other than Naomi Harris, I'm not sure I've seen a black leading lady from across the pond that was darker than a paper bag yet.  Comparison: Gotta love Halle. We pushed her through the door first. But we've got enough of THAT going on over here already. It's time for women that look like Viola Davis and Rutina Wesley to have their turn in the sun.

POINT 1: OSCARS MATTER

POINT 3: WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LIE DOWN FOR THIS

However, I have a dream.  And I live for that dream. I live for the day when white people are a numerical minority. I live for the day where white people must have a white actors awards ceremony all their own because there is no other way for them to know who is the best white actor, best white film of the year.

That is, I live for the day when "The Oscars" are truly representative of all Americans. 

I live for the day when diverse, multi-ethnic Oscars race peacefully co-exists with Black FUBU actor award shows, Latinx FUBU actor award shows, and White FUBU actor award shows.

I can't wait for white folks to need their own actors awards show. I'm hopping up and down and spinning in a circle on one foot anxious for that mess to happen. The year 2060, 2070 cannot get here fast enough.

In the meantime though? We need to figure out how to get our share of damn pie. Don't get it twisted. That flippin' Oscar matters. And it matters right now.

Berry got paid peanuts in the first X-men movie. But she got paid big money for the ones that followed the Oscar.

And while she hasn't been in every X-men movie, there's always a chance she's going to be in future ones. The "Storm" character is hers.  Berry even had enough audience-power/us-power to be in an X-men movie where she couldn't really perform required stunts because she was pregnant. She practically did a cameo in that movie -- but they didn't cut her out because they knew we'd raise hell.

That Oscar she won gave her to us and us to her


Morgan Freeman is still around and has played the same 3 or 4 roles using different character names because he was nominated for Oscars until he finally won one.

Denzel Washington is a household name because of his Oscar nominations and finally gets a win for a leading role. 
Taraji P Henson is still around and going strong in "Empire" because she was nominated. Yes, it made me mad she had to go to a T V series instead of parlaying that into a movie career like white folks and a certain percentage of black men, but...that's another story) 

POWEROPPORTUNITY

You can argue about how good or bad any one of Berry's projects were. The point is that Berry has power and ability to move and choose due to winning that Oscar. She got "Their Eyes Were Watching God" on screen, a decent mini-series based on a Zora Neale Hurstron novel. She brought a black classic to television. 

Jennifer Aniston, who is white, still has a movie career despite her projects being about as weak as some of Halle's  but without having lucked up into being in a franchise like "The X-Men" Maybe Aniston's a bad example because she's floating on "Friends" fame. But the other "Friends" actors haven't been able to float using "Friends" fame. Then again, they weren't married to Brad Pitt for a hot minute either.

The point is this: Oscar matters to black actors even more than it does to white. 

White people can cruise through a Hollywood career on whiteness. Hollywood, to the tune of 80%, has nothing to do with acting talent. Some people actually are extremely talented. Like Viola said in her acceptance speech, the only thing black women are missing in Hollywood is opportunity. But when you are pale you can luck up and have your genes, your face, and your mannerisms match a role of a good movie so well that you get famous.

I like Keanu Reeves. Seems like he's a generous person if rumors of his gifts to staff on set are true. But he's like a pale Boris Kodjoe.  Mostly what he's had going for him is looks (plus the magical ability to pick the right script) 


#OscarsSoWhite is a problem. But we need to change what's happening in front of the curtain just as bad as we need to change what's happening behind the curtain.

In front of the curtain, we need more black and brown movie and television projects. We need to ask "WHY?" in a loud voice when a movie like "Lila and Eve" doesn't get wide release (or any advertising at all after Samuel Goldwyn Films aquires it) when it's so well reviewed at the Sundance Film Festival and later on online sites. 

Behind the curtain, we need to remove all or most of the old white guys doing all the voting for the Oscars.  Whoever votes for movies, television, visual art that supposed to representative of all of us should look like all of us. If white people are 67% of the population they shouldn't be any more than 67% voting for the Oscars.

And when white folks numbers drop below 50% in this country the board at the Oscars should drop to the same percentage. Then white people should go ahead and create their own, separate white actors awards. Again, I'm looking forward to that, I'll attend the white actors awards too. I'll be the black woman way down front, not sitting in her seat but standing up, in everybody's way, doing the happy dance.

JADA SMITH ON OSCARS SO WHITE

Jada Pinkett Smith came out and said we, as black people, should boycott the Oscars because of #OscarsSoWhite, the sequel.  Her video is at the end of this post.

Her calling for a boycott is fine. But I think I would be feeling the racial solidarity a little deeper in my bones if her husband, Will Smith, hadn't just been skipped over for "Concussion."


Now, I didn't see "Concussion" But that's not the point.  The point is, Jada didn't come out and seriously trounce "Oscars So White" LAST YEAR with half the passion...THIS YEAR it looks like a case of sour grapes. 

 So, I'm sorry. I cannot give Jada any love on this...like...at all.

The first "Aunt Viv" on "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Aire" kinda read Jada and Will's motivations on this the same way. (Note: There's bad blood here because, rumor has it,  the first "Aunt Viv" actress was fired from "Fresh Prince" 20 years ago. And rumor has it she was fired because she and a wet behind the ears Will Smith didn't get along.)

Even so, I do agree with Jada. And it's not like I wouldn't like to boycott the Oscars-- as a watcher. But I already don't watch them.

They've been too white for years. And when a black woman does win it's for a stereotypical role that white people can get behind.


It almost made me vomit to have to be happy for Denzel Washington and Halle Berry when they won best actor and

best actress at the same time.  Denzel  won for being the thuggiest thug there has ever been in "Training Day" (out of all the other roles he's done exceptional work in) and Halle Berry won for being an abusive mother in "Monster's Ball" and did an explicit sex scene with the most repulsive hillbilly -type character I've seen in a while. Most of the black women I know were offended by that sex scene and by Halle's taking the role in the first place.

HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE OSCAR HALLE WON FOR MONSTER'S BALL LAUNCHED HER CAREER INTO A WHOLE NEW ORBIT.



I think the 2001 Oscars was the last Oscars I even attempted to watch a part of. So, I can't boycott what I already refuse to watch

But I also refuse to say, "I don't care."
I do care.
Know why? 

AMERICA

BELONGS

TO

US

TOO!

And that Oscar means something. That Oscar means more recognition. That Oscar means more roles will offered. That Oscar means you get to tell your own stories with a huge budget. 

You're damn skippy, I care.

"We should make our own stuff," some say.

My answer,  "We do."  

There are black people who have been making their own films for us for decades. You don't know 95% of their names. There are people making black internet series. You know why you don't  know who they are? Because they aren't getting national exposure....AT THE DAMN OSCARS IN THE UNITED STATES AMERICA ON NATIONAL TELEVISION WHERE YOUR ANCESTOR'S BLOOD SOAKED THE SOIL


When we get Oprah's OWN and BET to do 90% scripted black and brown programming, I'll be interested in "Let's do our own stuff" again.

When black people get together,
redefine black excellence as something other than making a whole bunch of money for ONE'S SELF
 and follow up by deciding to
jump up and down on Oprah's head
and whoever own's BET's head
(even if they are white)

Until then,  we need to focus on the left side of the graphic below: 




Just like we need to stop looking at the cops that murder and look at the judges and prosecutors that set murdering cops loose instead, we need to focus on the people behind the curtain pulling the strings. We need to look at replacing the Academy Judges.




Yes. Twenty nomination going to all white people, even to freaking Sylvester Stallone, even to white people that don't even live in this country, even to white people in movies that nobody even thought about seeing IS a problem. 

But the people behind the curtain,  the mostly old white men behind the curtain, are the biggest problem. Those judges are the ones that must be replaced to the tune of one-third or more.



All we have to do now is figure out how to hurt the Oscars folk in the wallet so that these old white men will be removed.


 When you find a way to take away the money white people sit up and listen. That's an always and forever kinda thing.  So how do we take away the money in a public way, suddenly, that's really noticeable?

Would all black and brown people turning off the Oscars really do it? Would refusing to click one thing on the internet that says "Oscar" do it? 

Maybe we should also think of a new awards show for people of color. We could keep Black awards shows, keep Latino awards shows, and keep Asian awards shows but ALSO have a much larger "People of Color Award Show" for actors. Maybe we need to focus on combining are numbers. We'd need a less clumsy name for the show. But you do get my drift, right?

Let me say this again: If our outnumbering white people is going to mean anything in 2050 or 2060, we better start pulling in the same direction.

Conclusion: Sour grapes or not, I hope Jada's protest attracts the attention of other black actors and actresses and they all refuse to go.  But I'm still thinking about what's next.

Hmmm...I wonder what Chris Rock is going to do. He's supposed to be the host for the Oscars this year. The possibilities are endless...(Insert Mean Grin Here)
